The Alicia Patterson Foundation (APF) has been providing six-month and one-year fellowships to support independent journalism for decades. But the fellowships can be difficult for photographers to win, says Philadelphia Inquirer photographer April Saul, who managed to win one of 11 fellowships awarded this year.
