Film Has Grain

David J. Carol

DAVID CAROL 2013

Film has grain. I love grain. In my photographs, grain is often part of the image.  For example, if I'm shooting a stark or desolate scene, I know the grain will be a major component in the photograph. The picture that illustrates this article was taken on a foggy winter day at the beach. I loved the patterns of the ground and I knew that the grain structure of my film would add texture to the misty and grey sky. It worked exactly the way I wanted. The grain became an intrinsic part of the image, giving everything balance and structure.
