Dear Right Moves,

I am a photographer working out of his apartment, renting a studio when I need one. I am just starting my career, and something great and unexpected happened.
I was called to bid on a huge luxury makeup company to do a big campaign for them, and in the same week, ANOTHER major cosmetic asked me to launch their new product. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Some of my friends ‘in the business’ have told me I have to tell each account about the other as my style is uniquely identifiable. In such a competitive business wouldn’t that be suicide? They both might drop me.
What’s the right thing to do ethically and the smart thing to do for my career?

Everyone Should Be So Lucky
Detroit, Michigan

Dear Everyone Should Be So Lucky,
The fact is that you have neither account at the moment. Bid both jobs and hope that both come through and you even have the problem of such an embarrassment of riches. Chances are slim that you will get them both, but if this is your lucky full moon, before you call anyone, read the contract and see what each even says about exclusivity.
The accounts might not even care. Depending on the rights they are buying, and the contract that they need you to sign, you will know what you must do, rather than what you should do.
