Dear Right Moves,

Why does every teacher, mentor, adviser, have a completely different suggestion as to what I need to do to make my portfolio better? Who should I listen to? How am I supposed to know who’s “right”?

Mixed Directions, New Brunswick, New Jersey

Dear Mixed Directions,

Find a teacher, mentor or adviser whom you ADMIRE. Seek advice from her/him. If you’re asking everyone for opinions you’ll be completely confused. “Right” advice resonates. You’ll FEEL its "rightness." Have an ongoing dialogue with the person you admire, understanding you are not the only emerging photographer she/he is counseling. If you are respectful of your mentor’s time, he will appreciate you as a person as well as a photographer.

To submit your advice questions to Right Moves, send an email to myrna@myrnak.com.
