Dear Right Moves,

I've been looking for a first-assistant job for eight months and have found nothing.    What's the matter with me?  I've asked my friends how I might interview or present differently but they don't have a clue.  What should I do? I need to see myself as others see me because I'm clearly messing up.

Need to Improve
West Islip, Long Island, New York

Dear Need to Improve,

Videotape yourself in a staged interview. You'll need two friends. One to "act" as the hiring photographer and one to video the staged interview.

Be prepared to answer the following questions: Where did you study? What value was photography school to you? Why do you want to be a photographer? Why did you choose (whatever specialty you've chosen)? Why do you want to work with him/her specifically? What is the best skill you will bring to this job? Where do you think you need improvement? How long do you want to be an assistant? Where do you envision yourself in five years? Who are your hero photographers and why?

Listen to your voice. Watch your body language. You'll be amazed. One of Winston Churchill's most intriguing quotes is  "To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often." In other words, you're already going in the right direction.
