Right Moves: Postponing College

Myrna is an industry insider, producing and representing visual artists, in their commercial and personal projects.

My daughter is graduating from high school this year and last night announced that she wants to postpone going to college for a year and get right into assisting at a professional photographer’s studio. I think she’s good. I KNOW she is passionate about photography. Right Moves, what do you think? Postponing college doesn’t sound like a good idea to me, but is this the way to get a jump on her schoolmates in the workplace?

A Photographer’s Dad, Richmond Virginia

Dear Photographer’s Dad,

Your daughter is lucky to have you as a father. It’s not too often that I receive letters from concerned parents. When I do, I put them on the top of my “Answer Now” list. I’ve looked at the link you sent me and your daughter’s work already has a consistent and distinctly dream-like style. It’s as if she’s showing us her world through the filter of her lens, which is exactly what photography should do.  My advice is that she go to a college that fosters visual creativity.  She’s too young to go directly into a professional studio. She needs at least a year of the enhanced creativity and advanced technique taught at a university.  As good as she is, at least one year at a top visual university and she’ll be way ahead of where she is now.
