Why I Do Portfolio Reviews

This week, I'll be reviewing portfolios for the Palm Springs Photo Festival at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York City. I will spend two afternoons looking at the work of photographers who are, for the most part, complete strangers. I will be doing this for free.

Why am I giving up two afternoons of my time to look at the work of total strangers for no financial compensation? Because I love photography!

I love what photography has given me. It has given me a life and career that has introduced me to creative and fascinating people. Photography has allowed me to travel the world, from the frozen Arctic to the hot Red Center of central Australia, from Russia to Costa Rica to Paris and back home to New York again.

Photography has given me a life I could have only dreamed of as a child. Now, I know this sounds melodramatic, but it really is the truth. It's also the reason I take a bunch of days every year and volunteer my time to help out photographers by discussing, critiquing and helping them out with their work. I want to give back and it's a pleasure to do it.

This week, I will be meeting new and interesting people and we will talk about photography. That's why I do it. Lucky me!
