Brandon Magnus-Ledesma decided he wanted to work for Donald Miralle when he saw one of Miralle’s photographs in a textbook during his final year at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, so he e-mailed persistently. Eventually the award-winning sports photographer hired Magnus-Ledesma to assist on a 2012 shoot for Golf Digest. They’ve been together ever since. Magnus-Ledesma “knows what he wants, and he won’t stop until he gets it,” says Miralle. The most nervous Miralle’s ever seen Magnus-Ledesma was while they were preparing to shoot the Ironman Competition—Magnus-Ledesma had never done underwater photography. “He got his scuba certification, and learned how to use my underwater gear,” Miralle explains. The hard work paid off: Magnus-Ledesma’s personal underwater shots are worthy of his mentor.
