The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund will be announcing its 37th annual grant in humanistic photography on Thursday, October 13, during an event at New York City’s School of Visual Arts (SVA) Theatre. In addition to the $30,000 award, they will also announce and present the 2016 jurors’ discretionary Smith Fellowships and the 2016 Howard Chapnick Grant.
The ceremony will include keynote presentations by Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side; Going Clear; founder, Jigsaw Productions) and Kathy Ryan (director of photography, The New York Times Magazine). The program will include presentations of photo essays by 2016’s grant and fellowship recipients and finalists.
Chosen from over 300 submissions from around the world, the grant is presented each year to photographers whose work carries forward the tradition practiced by American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith during his 45-year-long career.
Doors open at 6:15pm for the 7pm event. Admission is free, but seating is limited; you can RSVP here.
