Picture Story: A Soccer Team for the Homeless

Preston Gannaway met Isabella Black through the San Francisco LGBT Center after months looking for the right subject. Over coffee, Black invited the photographer to watch a Street Soccer USA game, part of a league for homeless youth. 

Preston Gannaway’s photo essay about a soccer team for homeless and at-risk youth in San Francisco, recently published online by ESPN, grew from the photographer’s long-term personal project about queer youth, and draws attention to an under-reported statistic: 40 percent of homeless youth nationwide identify as LGBT. “People have this picture of what homeless people look like,” the photographer says....
