Afghanistan-born photographer Zalmaï’s new book mixes black-and-white images with flashes of color to portray the hardship and hope of Afghan citizens.

In black-and-white images, spare as bone but thick with texture, we see an underrepresented Afghanistan: Beyond baby-faced coalition soldiers and their cagey Taliban opponents, behind the glad-handing politicians and their cynical enablers, live ordinary Afghans who struggle to survive and dream of a better tomorrow.
