3  of  7 At the bank of the Pigeon River sits the Walter Hydroelectric power plant. Built between 1927 and 1930, the plant is linked to Walters Dam by a six-mile tunnel that runs through the surrounding mountains. The plant lets out “recreational releases,” or powerful surges of water, three times a week. These currents are dubbed the “Dirty Bird” by river rafters.
