Canon Announces New 12MP PowerShot S100 to Replace S95

Canon launched the PowerShot S100 this morning, a new high-end compact camera with a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor that can shoot full 1080p video at 24 frames per second.

The Canon PowerShot S100 is the followup to the 10MP S95, which was one of the best reviewed compacts from last year. The S100 keeps the fast f/2.0 lens from the previous model but extends the zoom range to a versatile 24-120mm. With Canon's latest camera processor, DIGIC 5, the pocket-friendly S100 can shoot 10 frames per second in burst mode.

The S100 is also primed for shooting in dim conditions, extending its ISO settings from 80-6400 so you can capture images in low light without nuking the subject with the flash. It has optical image stabilization for keeping shots steady and built-in GPS for geo-tagging your images. Unlike the S95, the S100 comes in black or silver and has slight grip to make it easier to hold.

It will sell for $429.
