Object of Desire: Canon Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II

MAY 29, 2014

By Dan Havlik

After 14 years, the MR-14EX ring flash was due for an update and Canon’s given it to us with version II of this handy light source for close-up photography. When used in conjunction with Canon’s EF Macro lenses, the Macro Ring Lite MR- 14EX II will give you well-lit, lifelike close-ups of flora and fauna. The new light has a more modern control module than its predecessor, sitting on the hot shoe for easy access. Recycle time is also quicker on the updated version and it supports E-TTL wireless autoflash in conjunction with one or more Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT flash units. It has a maximum guide number of 34.4 feet/10.5 meters at ISO 100, and sports a twin-tube design where both flash tubes can be fired independently or together. White LED focusing lamps and two forms of modeling lights on the MR-14EX II make it a snap to accurately preview lighting effects, and the illuminated dot-matrix LCD lets you make quick adjustments including 12 custom functions.
