Object of Desire: Epson Metallic Photo Paper

JUNE 24, 2014

By Dan Havlik

It took Epson a while, but the company has finally jumped into the metallic photo paper business with two shiny offerings. Rather than the flashy, silver look of some competing papers, Epson’s metallic Photo Paper Luster and metallic Photo Paper glossy are whiter and subtler in tone but still eye-catching. Metallic Photo Paper glossy is the brighter and more striking of the two. Metallic Photo Paper Luster has a polished metallic cast to it but is similar to Epson’s traditional Photo Paper Luster, which is one of our favorite papers for printing inkjet photos. Epson says the two new metallic papers were developed over several years in collaboration with professional photographers and fine artists, and the attention to detail shows. In sample prints we reviewed, the papers produced snappy but accurate color tones, retained rich detail in the shadow areas and had good overall sharpness. Epson’s metallic papers come in a variety of sizes, from 8.5 x 11-inch cut sheets to 36-inch rolls.

Price: $24 to $359, depending on size and format
