Objects of Desire: Redrock microEVF

We featured Redrock Micro in our camera rigs roundup story last month and it’s nice to see the Hollywood-based company still lighting it up with new video innovations. This time around, they’ve got a sweet new accessory viewfinder for your HD-DSLR called the Redrock microEVF.

If you shoot high-def video with your digital SLR, you’ve likely seen the current crop of viewfinders which fit over the LCD of your camera and magnify the screen so you can more easily view your live footage. The Redrock microEVF improves on that design in two distinct ways. For starters, as its name suggests, it’s an electronic viewfinder (not an optical magnifier) which draws its live HD feed from the HDMI port, helping you get a clean, crisp look at what you’re shooting. Weighing less than six ounces, the Redrock microEVF features a 1.2 million-dot backlit display inside the eyecup that’s actually higher resolution than the LCD screens on the back of most DSLRs.

And since it’s not funneling the image from the rear camera display, you can place the Redrock microEVF in a variety of more comfortable and convenient positions around your camera. If you want another set of eyeballs on what you’re shooting, connect an HDMI splitter and add another monitor so the director and client can both view what’s being filmed. Though the Redrock microEVF isn’t exactly cheap—$595—it’s a pretty good deal for what it can do. It’s compatible with any HD-DSLR with an HDMI port including the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Nikon D3s.

 Cost: $595
