Olympus Tough cameras have a long heritage of taking the proverbial licking. In its latest incarnation, the Tough TG-5, the camera can not only survive a pounding but delivers a wealth of data-rich features to complement your action filmmaking.
The Olympus Tough TG-5 features a 12-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor and an integrated 25-100mm, f/2 lens with a new anti-fog lens cover. What sets it apart from its action cam competitors is a series of sensors to record data–either simultaneously, with video, or independently.
The camera’s Field Sensor System features a GPS sensor, manometer, compass and temperature sensor. Thanks to the camera’s built-in Wi-Fi, this data can be relied to smartphones and displayed alongside your stills and video on the Olympus Image Track App. You can also check this data on the camera’s 3-inch display, even when the camera is powered off.
Beyond its intelligent interior, the TG-5 is built to dive up to 50 feet underwater, withstand 220 pounds of force, falls from 7 feet and temperatures down to 14°F.
The TG-5 can record 4K/30p video, full HD up to 120 fps and 4K time lapse movies. It features a max ISO of 12,800 and can capture RAW still image files.
The camera has four macro modes with a maximum magnification of 7x. A focus stacking mode captures eight different shots, changing focus from foreground to background and then merging the exposures into a single image with a large depth of field. There’s also a focus bracketing mode that captures up to 30 images while shifting the focus from the foreground to the background. Users can select the amount of focus shift and number of shots in three levels.
Additional features include:
- four underwater shooting modes
- focus peaking and manual focus assist
- Pro Capture mode to save images to buffer memory before fully pressing the shutter
- Nighttime Live Composite mode for shooting fireworks and star trails
- 14 art filters
- HDR mode
The Olympus Stylus Tough TG-5 will be available in red and black beginning in June for $450. It is available for pre-order now.
