New Firmware to Make Sony’s A7 II Focus Faster, Shoot Fatter Files

Starting on November 18th, Sony A7 II owners will be able to download new firmware for their cameras to help them focus faster and take uncompressed RAW files.

The new, free firmware (available here) will activate the 117-point focal plane phase detection autofocus sensor in Sony A7 II cameras for both A-mount and E-mount lenses. With the update, the A7 II will focus faster and more precisely, Sony promises.

Like the A7R II, the A7 II will also get user-selectable compressed/uncompressed RAW file shooting options with the new firmware. You’ll also be able to assign the movie button to a custom setting, if your heart so desires.

The A7 II is available now for $1,698 (body).
