Object of Desire: Zeiss Loxia 2.4/85

December 26, 2016

By Greg Scoblete

Sony portrait photographers have some new full-frame Zeiss glass to ogle. The Loxia 2.4/85 has a minimum focusing distance of .8 meters with a long manual focus ring that turns 220 degrees for super-precise manual focusing. It’s a full-time manual focus lens but its electronic contacts will transmit lens EXIF data to your Sony camera body and will trigger focus zoom magnification to help you dial in your focusing on the camera’s display. The Loxia is filmmaker-friendly with an aperture that can be declicked using an included tool for smooth and silent exposure transitions. The lens stops down to f/22. Like other models in the line, the new 85mm is compatible with Zeiss’ optional Lens Gear accessory—a geared aluminum mount that slides over the lens so you can use standard follow focus systems with the Loxia. The aluminum lens is weatherproof and weighs .87 pounds. The 85mm lens joins a lineup that already includes 21mm, 35mm and 50mm focal lengths.
