Objects of Desire: Knog qudos

GoPro’s wave of success has brought forth a sea of accessory doodads committed to building out the rugged camera for commercial use. One firm doing just that is the Australian-based Knog, whose versatile qudos action light is designed to bring high-powered illumination to action-cam videography. As you’d expect, the 5.3-ounce qudos is built to take a beating. It’s waterproof to a depth of 40 meters, and the company claims it’s survived “countless” drop tests. In addition to the tough guy exterior, it shines 400 lumens worth of light from three Cree LEDs. You’ll have a choice of three light modes—action spot, target spot and ambient—to control the width and intensity of your lighting. It features a USB-rechargeable lithium polymer battery that’s also replaceable, so you can swap batteries mid-shoot—provided you’re not underwater. It’s not strictly a GoPro accessory either—the qudos can mount to Sony action cams or other models that accept GoPro conversion mounts. The qudos ships with a cold shoe adapter for mounting onto DSLRs as well as a tripod adapter for use as an off-camera, continuous light source.
