Objects of Desire: HDR Photography with Your iPhone

October 14, 2010

Yes, if you really and truly can’t get enough of HDR photography it’s now built into the latest operating system—iOS 4.1—for the iPhone 4. The High Dynamic Range feature automatically snaps several photos at different exposures with the iPhone 4’s 5-megapixel camera and then combines them into one more evenly balanced image.

Yes, this is a far cry from doing the same thing with a pro camera and high-end HDR software but it does work fairly well in tamping down highlights and opening up shadows in your phone photos. Best of all, the HDR feature is designed to give your iPhone pix a more natural exposure rather than one of those obnoxious, surreal-looking high dynamic messes that are so popular these days amongst amateurs. And if you’re already an iPhone user, the new mobile operating system is a free upgrade.

Cost: Free for iPhone users
