Stenneken's Last Call appealed to the jurors with its editing and customized design.

Photographer Judith Stenneken of Berlin has been awarded the $25,000 Grand Prize in the third annual Photography Book Now competition, sponsored by Blurb, for her photography book, Last Call. The book, a study of the now-shuttered Tempelhof Airport, a lifeline to West Berlin during the Cold War, was selected by the contest judges from more than 2,300 books submitted by photographers in 40 countries. In addition to the grand prize, 12 other prizes were awarded.

Darius Himes, publisher of Radius Books and lead juror for the competition, said of Stenneken, “She edited and sequenced the work intelligently, creating an intimate view of a grand space within the pages of her book.” Stenneken also modified the readymade, on-demand book format by adding endpapers, a handmade fold-out page and gold-plating on the cover.

Now in its third year, the Photography Book Now competition was created by Blurb, the on-demand, online publishing platform, to honor creative and innovative self-published books. All 13 prize winners, plus 30 Honorable Mentions, will be available in the Blurb bookstore and will be added to the permanent collections of the International Center of Photography, the Annenberg Space for Photography, and the George Eastman House.
