Photo editor Jodi Peckman of
Rolling Stone has been promoted
to Creative Director at the magazine, managing editor Will Dana
announced yesterday. Dana said Peckman’s promotion was a
recognition of her “countless unacknowledged contributions to the
entire look and feel of
Rolling Stone.” Peckman will
continue to run the magazine's photo department.
Peckman has been the photo editor of
Rolling Stone since
2003. She joined the magazine in 1987, and served as deputy photo
editor from 1993 to 1997, when she left to become photo director at
FHM. She returned to run
Rolling Stone’s photo
department in 2003.
“I was shocked,” Peckman said of the promotion. “I’m
thrilled. I’ve been working towards it, but it’s such a leap for a
photo person.” She notes that photography is an essential
element of
Rolling Stone, and she has always reported
directly to the editor, as the magazine’s art director does.
In his memo, Dana said, “This new title reflects her importance to
the entire
enterprise of
Rolling Stone - from taking charge
on deadline-busting
bookazine projects, to deciding what we'll
order for closing-night dinners,
to helping [art director] Joe
Hutchinson and me to determine the overall visual make-up of the
magazine.”
Peckman has worked on several standalone anthologies, including one
on Barack Obama and one on Michael Jackson, that combine previously
published and newly assigned articles and photos. She has also
worked on Rolling Stone books and consults on
Men’s Journal,
which like
Rolling Stone is published by Wenner Media.
Peckmann has won awards from the Society of Publication Designers,
National Magazine Awards, and American Photography Awards.
