South African photographer Pieter Hugo won this year's Discovery
Award for his exhibition "Hyena Men," about a family of traveling
animal trainers in Nigeria, and his series on honey collectors in
Ghana. The award, which includes a EUR 25,000 prize, was announced
July 20 at the Recontres d'Arles in the south of France.
The Discovery Award honors a photographer "whose work has recently
been discovered internationally and deserves to be." Hugo had been
nominated by Elisabeth Biondi, visuals editor at
The New
Yorker, one of five judges invited by designer Christian
Lacroix, the guest curator of this year's Recontres, to submit
three nominees for the award. This year's other judges were
Caroline Issa, Masoud Golsorkhi, Nathalie Ours, Carla Sozzani and
Luis Venegas.
Hugo's work is on display in Arles through September 14.
Also at Arles, the Contemporary Book award was given to Michael
Abrams'
Strange and Singular, published b y Loosestrife
Editions. The book is a collection of discarded images Abrams
found.
