January is deadline season for many big photo contests (including, hint hint, the
PDN Photo Annual). Below are some deadlines to remember as you prepare your best work of 2008 to submit for consideration.
Thursday January 15: World Press Photo
The annual photojournalism competition is open to all professional photographers and photojournalists, and there is no cost to enter.
Thursday January 15: Pictures of the Year International
The 66th annual POYi competition is accepting digital entries in various documentary photography, multimedia, and visual editing categories.
Friday January 16: Art Directors Club Awards
Deadlines for the 88th Annual ADC “Gold Cube” awards are January 16 for professionals and January 30 for students. There are several photography categories.
Friday January 16: Society of Publication Designers
SPD’s early deadline was January 9, but the competition also has an extended deadline of January 16. As with ADC, there are several photography categories.
Friday January 23: Clio Awards
The annual advertising festival, which moves to Las Vegas this year, is open for submissions in various categories, including print ads. (The Clios and
PDN are both part of Nielsen Business Media.)
Friday January 23: 2009 Center Awards
Three contests organized by Center – including Review Santa Fe, Project Competition, and the Singular Image Awards – have a deadline of January 23.
Monday January 26: PDN Photo Annual

Thursday, January 29: Overseas Press Club Awards
The annual awards for international journalism include several photography awards, including the prized Robert Capa Gold Medal Award.
Friday January 30: NPPA Best of Photojournalism
The National Press Photographer’s Association BOP contest is accepting entries in still photo, editing, and Web categories until January 30. (News Video entries are due by January 23.)
Saturday January 31: Dorothea Lang-Paul Taylor Prize
If you’re part of a writer-photographer documentary team, this is your prize. The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University awards $20,000 annually.
