Picture of the Year International's Documentary Project of the Year
prize went to Reuters for "Times of Crisis," an in-depth
examination of the global financial crisis that the wire service
produced in conjunction with MediaStorm.
The top editing prize, called the Angus McDougall Overall
Excellence in Editing Award, went to the
Los Angeles Times.
Judges said they gave the paper the award "for its consistent
approach and dedication to photojournalism in both print and
multimedia."
Judging for the competition, which took place over a three-week
period, ended on Friday, March 5.
With judging in all categories completed, POYi organizers confirmed
the names of the photographers behind the portfolios that won
various prizes earlier in the competition. Organizers withhold
those names until all judging is finished, although several news
organizations identified the photographers soon after POYi posted
the winning portfolios. (As PDN reported previously, Paul Hansen
from the Swedish newspaper
Dagens Nyheter won Newspaper
Photographer of the Year, and Paris-based Tomas van Houtryve, who
is represented by Panos Pictures, won Freelance/Agency Photographer
of the Year).
Winners of various multimedia prizes awarded last week included
The Dallas Morning News, which won first place in the
feature story category; freelancers David Stephenson and Amy
Wilson, who won first place in the news story category; and Liz O.
Baylen of the
Los Angeles Times, who won first prize in the
issue reporting category.
In the newspaper editing categories, first prizes went to
The
Denver Post for feature story,
The Dallas Morning News
for news story, and the
Los Angeles Times for issue
reporting story.
National Geographic won first place prizes for both magazine
editing/feature story and magazine editing/news story.
The Best Use of Photography awards went to
The New York
Times in the newspaper category,
GEO Kompact in the
magazine category, and
National Geographic in the online
publications category.
