Jana [Cruder] was first referred to me by a classmate and
friend of hers, Steve Giralt, a photographer I had also worked
with. Jana graduated from RIT and after working with her I am
convinced the university produces unmatched amazing talent. I had
just started on Vegas Magazine and was overwhelmed with the amount
of florescent lighting and excessive Photoshop use within their
photo market. Jana was like a wonderful natural-light breath of
fresh air.
"My favorite project we did together was a feature called "Vegas
Aces" for the July/August issue of the magazine. It centered on the
top five bachelors in the city. We had about one week to put the
shoot together on a little more than pennies. I wanted to have a
sexy shoot, but also show each bachelor's unique personality. We
shot on location at a night club and while the bachelors were the
focus, we needed to make sure they did not come off as typical Las
Vegas playboys. This was a particularly
challenging task as no one from the magazine was able to be on set
and she had the responsibility of carrying out direction from me in
the New York office while adding her own creative, personal touch.
We crammed all the portraits into one day and she was able to pull
it off perfectly. Jana went above and beyond with the budget and
stretched it to great lengths. She was able to find a hair and
makeup artist and a stylist for the shoot, all on very short
notice. I love that the story flows so well together, but yet
each image could be strong on its own.
"The best quality about Jana is her laid back and positive
attitude. In an industry where you constantly encounter
larger-than-life egos, she is modest. She always comes through on
short notice and goes above and beyond the expectations. It is easy
to see that the subjects within her photos respond to and trust
her, and that is why the images always come out so well. Overall,
she is a powerful visual storyteller."
