Dickman and Kinghorn Teach May Digital Journalism Workshop in Knoxville

In conjunction with Pellissippi State Technical Community College, Olympus Visionaries Jay Dickman and Jay Kinghorn will teach a one-week workshop on Digital Photojournalism at the college's Bagwell Center for Media Technology in Knoxville, Tenessee from May 14 to 19, 2007.

Dickman is a regular contributor to National Geographic and won a 1982 Pulitzer Prize for work he did in El Salvador. Kinghorn is an imaging specialist and certified Adobe Photoshop instructor, as well as a photographer. The two co-authored Perfect Digital Photography in 2005.

"Workshops are inspiring, challenging experiences in which personal growth is the end result," says Dickman, who created and runs FirstLight Workshops. "Watching individuals exceed their self-imposed limits and surprise themselves with their new-found ability is inspiring." For his part, Kinghorn says he's looking forward to having the opportunity to give students "a lot of real world experience and one-on-one feedback to help them reach the next level."

In addition to mastering digital workflow skills, students at Knoxville will participate in a series of professional-style photo shoots. Dickman says subjects will include everything from the local minor league baseball team to the Tennessee Valley Authority public works program. "There will be a few assignments where we'll send more than one photographer, which is a lesson in its own right, because it teaches you about how others see the same situation in an entirely different light," he says.

Who can attend? According to both Dickman and Kinghorn, the only prerequisite is passion. "Because it's such a small, intimate group, the workshop is ideal for any photographer who's really passionate about the art and craft of photography and really wants to take better pictures," says Kinghorn. Dickman agrees that the workshop is perfect "for anyone who has a passion or an inkling that they may have a passion for this magical craft."

Other instructors at the Knoxville workshop will be National Geographic Senior Photo Editor Kurt Mutchler and editorial photographer K.D. Lawson.
