Jared Leeds Shoots Book Cover for Simon and Schuster

By Barbara Goldman

Su Meck, amnesia subject from I Forgot to  Remember: A Memoir of Amnesia.

Last summer,  Jared Leeds photographed the book cover of I Forgot to Remember: A Memoir of Amnesia for Simon & Schuster.  Su Meck lost her memory after a freak accident in her kitchen years ago.The book is  a memoir of Meck's experiences with amnesia after a ceiling fan fell and hit her in the head in her kitchen in 1988. The art director and Leeds wanted to convey the feeling of emptiness, so they discussed photographing her in an open field. However, when Leeds talked with Meck about her experience she said it felt more like being in an enclosed space. Leeds shot her in a narrow hall in her house and then  experimented and made the shot out of focus. To his surprise, Simon & Schuster went with that image for the book cover.  Read and see even more from the shoot at Leeds' blog.
