Los Angeles-based food photographer Crystal Cartier is this week's contest winner with her image of a deconstructed pea ravioli dish. Cartier says she likes to play with presenting food in different ways, taking a graphic approach to make common dishes more alluring.
Cartier is currently working on art series that explores landscapes created by the colored dye in melted sugars. She says, "The results of this food play are unexpected and evoke many visual parallels to nature." Cartier always aims for artistry, with a painterly eye and a desire to push boundaries. The California light in her sunny studio can be seen in her body of work, bringing her creative direction to life with a warm and appetizing, natural look.
