While photographing in Riis Park, “I turned around and this girl in her quinciñera dress comes over the hill and I was like, Whoa! Here’s the visual,” Cassella says. “This teenager was having this great day in her life when a day before, in the same park, at the same time of day, another teenager had lost his life.”

Chicago is notorious for its gun violence. Gun deaths in the city totaled 390 in 2014, and 443 in 2015.
