Object of Desire: Polaroid Socialmatic

Love a good mash up? Polaroid’s Socialmatic has managed to unite five imaging trends into a single, unique camera. It’s square, like a classic Polaroid print; makes prints instantly, like a classic Polaroid; runs Android and has a rear-facing selfie camera, like a smartphone; and connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, like, well, everything. Then there’s the social element. Each print produced by the camera can display a unique QR code that allows other Socialmatic camera owners (or those using the mobile app) to scan the code and learn more about the image, such as where it was taken. Every Socialmatic camera can also display a unique QR code on a front-facing LED, so that fellow Socialmatic owners can scan your camera and effectively follow your subsequent photography through the app. When not displaying the QR code, the camera’s front LED can also show off emoticons, so you can tell the world how you’re feeling—if your sunny disposition wasn’t already obvious. The 14-megapixel Socialmatic sports a 4.5-inch touch screen display and in addition to Wi-Fi, can pair with mobile devices using Bluetooth. The onboard printing comes courtesy of Zink (Zero Ink) technology, which spits out a 2 x 3-inch print.
