Leica Adds New M Digital Rangefinder

November 20, 2015

Leica has a new digital rangefinder in its M series. The new M (Typ 262) sheds a few features, and weight, found on other M models, including video and live view.

You’ll find a 24-megapixel, full frame CMOS sensor and a new aluminum body that’s 100 grams lighter than the existing Ms.

Additional features include:

* Native ISO range of 200-6400

* 3-inch display

* quiet shutter

* 3fps continuous shooting to 8 images

* 1GB buffer memory

* manual or aperture priority shooting modes

* 1/180s flash sync speed

* 1/4000 sec. max shutter speed

Thanks to the loss of some features, like video recording, the menu on this M has been shortened and is now down to two pages, or as Leica puts it, “lean and concise.” There’s also a new dedicated button on the back of the camera to set white balance.

The Leica M (Typ 262) ships at the end of November for $5,195. It is available for pre-order now.

The company is also expanding its à la carte program to include the Leica M (Typ 240) digital rangefinder. Through the program, you can customize your M through a choice of body finishes and camera features.

The standard model in the à la carte series will double the buffer memory of the original M, to 2GB, allowing for longer continuous shooting.

You’ll also be able to select an M with a frame selection lever that simulates six different focal lengths in the viewfinder, or a camera without video recording features. You can customize the glass on the camera’s LCD display by selecting either Corning Gorilla Glass or an “almost unbreakable” sapphire glass cover.

Style-wise, the M Typ 240 will be available in a choice of finishes including black chrome, silver chrome or black enamel. You can personalize the trim and camera strap too, choosing colored cowhide options in gray, red, dark blue, khaki, brandy, boysenberry and coffee bean, as well as classic options embossed with lizard and ostrich leather patterns.

The top and back of the camera can be engraved as well.

Leica will sell its à la carte M Typ 240 through its website at the end of November starting at $6,380.
