Canon did damage control this week on a potential exposure metering issue with its new 22.3-megapixel EOS 5D Mark III full-frame digital SLR, saying it would offer free inspections to any 5D III in the United States or Puerto Rico.
The offer came in the form of a product advisory on the Canon USA website.
The advisory was a follow-up to a similarly worded notice on the Canon 5D Mark III from April 13th, saying that when the camera’s “LCD panel illuminates in extremely dark environments, the displayed exposure value may change.”
Some websites, including this one initially, have described the problem as a “light leak” though that is not entirely accurate. The problem does not appear to result from light “leaking” onto the 5D Mark III’s full-frame sensor. Rather, the camera’s metering system can pick up flare from the 5D Mark III’s 3.2-inch rear LCD screen that will produce an exposure metering error in extremely dark situations.
In the latest product advisory, which is reprinted below, Canon said it would begin inspections in mid-May.
To Users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera
Thank you for using Canon products.
Concerning the EOS 5D Mark III digital SLR camera, when the LCD panel illuminates in extremely dark environments, the displayed exposure value may change. Canon has concluded the investigation of this phenomenon, and this announcement informs you of our findings as described below.
In extremely dark environments, if the LCD panel illuminates, the displayed exposure value may change. However, based on the results of extensive testing this change in exposure value will not noticeably affect the captured image.
