Canon has updated its 50mm f/1.8 STM EF mount lens making it tougher and more versatile than its predecessor.

Canon’s 50mm now incorporates stepping motor (STM) technology and Movie Servo AF for continuous autofocus during video recording. It’s also more compact than its predecessor at 1.5 inches and more durable thanks to a new metal mount. The focus ring has been repositioned as well.

The changes continue on the inside of the lens. The number of aperture blades has been increased from five to seven and the lens elements are coated with Super Spectra Coating for better flare and ghosting resistance than the earlier 50mm lens.

The minimum focusing distance has dropped from 1:5 to 1:1 with a maximum magnification of .21X.

The new 50mm will ship at the end of May and is available for pre-order now for $125.
