Lensbaby has pulled back the curtain on its newest lens, the Velvet 56, which promises to deliver the “ethereal look of a mid-20th century portrait lens.”

This 56mm manual portrait lens offers an aperture of f/1.6-16 with 9 diaphragm blades. It offers macro focusing at 1:2 with a minimum focusing distance of 5-inches from the front lens element. When shooting wide open, Lensbaby says you’ll enjoy a “velvety” image with a “film-like, organic quality.” You can view a gallery of sample shots from the new lens here.

The Velvet 56 is available for Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony A and Pentax K-mounts this month for $500.
