With the recently introduced a9 making a strong bid for the sports shooter’s dollar, Sony is adding a tempting new telephoto lens to its portfolio to reach into the end zone. The FE 100-400mm F4.5–5.6 GM OSS is Sony’s longest zoom G Master lens to date and offers optical image stabilization. It keeps pace with the rapidly autofocusing a9 thanks to a combination of a double linear motor and a Direct Drive SSM actuator. According to Sony, the dual motor system, along with revamped AF algorithms, helps the new lens capture sudden motion more precisely. This is the first Sony lens with a zoom torque adjustment ring so you can set how quickly (or slowly) the zoom ring responds to your twist. A focus hold button on the lens’s body can be assigned to a variety of camera functions including focus mode selection, AF area selection or Eye AF lock, among others. You’ll be able to focus on objects as close as 3.22-feet away. The FE 100-400mm is dust and moisture resistant and features fluorine coating on the front lens element to make it easier to clean. There’s a removable tripod collar and the lens is compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters if you need even more reach. The lens uses Sony’s Nano AR coating to minimize reflections.
