Object of Desire: Canon Photo Paper Pro Luster

One of our favorite inkjet photo papers of all time is, undoubtedly, Epson’s Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster. Now there’s another photo paper on the scene with a similar name that’s equally lust-worthy: Canon’s Photo Paper Pro Luster.

With a satiny smooth surface coating that reminds us of photographic resin, Canon Photo Paper Pro Luster does a great job of simulating a traditional RC print from a photo lab.

We tested 13 x 19-inch cut sheets of this medium-weight (255 gsm) paper with a Canon PIXMA Pro-1 printer and results were downright spectacular. Colors were bold but not oversaturated, coming very close to replicating what we saw on our computer screen. Though the luster texture of the paper seems better suited for color, our black-and-white prints looked stellar too, with deep, detailed blacks and even tonality from brights to shadows.

The velvety coating produced very quick drying times—we were able to pick up and inspect the prints just seconds after they came out of the Pro-1—and our photos looked consistently good under various lighting conditions. (For optimum viewing, look at them in soft window light.)

Canon’s Photo Paper Pro Luster comes in two sizes, 8.5 x 11 and 13 x 19 inches. We’d love to see it also offered in a 17 x 24-inch version but we guess we’ll have to wait until Canon introduces a new 17-inch inkjet printer. (Hint, hint, wink, wink.)

50-sheet pack of 8.5 x 11-inch paper, $34.99; 50-sheet pack of 13 x 19-inch paper, $99.99
