Object of Desire: Custom SLR M-Plate Pro Universal Tripod Plate System

Some of the best photo accessory ideas get their start as Kickstarter proposals and here’s another case in point. The Custom SLR design company first launched three products on the crowd-funding Web site, and those accessories are now shipping. The latest is called the M-Plate Pro and it’s a simple but slyly ingenious universal camera tripod plate.

The M-Plate Pro is the first quick-release tripod plate to offer built-in Manfrotto RC2 and Arca-Swiss connections, but that’s not what makes it unique. Once upon a time, photographers attached their camera straps just to the side eyelets of the camera body. But newer straps—such as BlackRapid straps and Custom SLR’s own C-Loop—attach to the tripod socket, slide across your chest and rest the camera comfortably at your hip for easy access. The one drawback to these innovative straps is that you have to remove them to use a tripod.

The M-Plate Pro solves this dilemma by offering extra sockets on the bottom of the plate for a tripod and a strap connector. There’s also a cluster of ports to add other accessories to the plate, including future photo and video accessories Custom SLR has in the works.

The M-Plate Pro is made in the U.S.A. from aerospace-grade aluminum and has a black anodized finish, so it’s durable but lightweight.
