Sometimes the best lighting set-ups are the simplest. Take the Lowel Ego, a digital imaging light that’s a sweet little solution for close-up tabletop images and food photography.

The Lowel Ego comes with two custom 27-watt “full spectrum” screw-in fluorescents that provide just the right amount of light for tabletop shoots. The lamp’s daylight color output has a high color-rendering index of 90+ for better accuracy than regular fluorescents. The lifetime of the custom lamps is rated at an average of 5,000 to 10,000 hours, so you’ll get a lot of usage before you need to replace the lights.

Each Lowel Ego has a 1/4-20 screw thread at its base to let you mount it on a tabletop or a tripod. The Lowel Ego is available two ways: as a single fixture with a reflective bounce card, and as a two-light set with a background sweep and a colored paper selection.

And talk about plug and play: You just plug these babies in and you’re ready to play.

Cost: One-light set, $143.50; two-light set, $305
