Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-6000

Do you relish the thought of printing your own gallery-sized giclées? The PRO-6000, the latest member of the revamped imagePROGRAF series, is the largest 12-ink printer currently on the market. It has 11 color tanks and a Chroma Optimizer with a sub-ink tank that allows you to swap out the 330ml ink cartridges while the unit is printing. According to Canon, the new LUCIA PRO inks have improved scratch resistance and improved reproduction in dark areas of your photo. Matte and Photo Black inks have their own dedicated nozzles so you won’t have to swap tanks to switch between the two. Thanks to a multi-function roll-feeding system, the printer can switch between two different media types without the user having to manually intervene. An internal densitometer enables you to keep your printer calibrated and built-in Wi-Fi lets you connect to the printer from across the room. The imagePROGRAF PRO-6000 offers a 320GB internal hard drive so you can move print jobs off your PC and onto the printer for a more streamlined workflow. Now all you have to do is find the room and a few buddies to help you position this 368-pound behemoth in your studio.

Beyond the pair of historically minded papers, the series includes a Photo Cotton Rag, Etching Cotton Rag, Exhibition Cotton Gloss and Exhibition Photo Baryta for your printing pleasure.

Breathing Color Allure Fine Art Metal

While many inkjet papers promise to deliver the sheen and luster of a metal print, they’re not actually metallic. Not so the Allure Fine Art Metal media from Breathing Color. It is metal. Treated to absorb aqueous inkjet ink, the panel is 0.45 inches thick and requires none of the heating or transferring that’s required of dye sublimation metal prints. The Allure media can be coated with several varnishes and laminates to achieve different looks (matte, satin, gloss, etc.). The metal media is compatible with Epson printers and is available in sheet sizes from 8 x 12-inches up to 4 x 8 feet.

Epson SureColor P5000

The 17-Inch SureColor P5000 replaces the Stylus Pro 4900 and uses Epson’s 200mL UltraChrome HDX ten-color pigment ink set. Epson improved the dust and static control on the printer to reduce maintenance (fewer clogged nozzles, etc.). The UltraChrome HDX ink has new orange and green inks, and its black inks are 1.5x denser than the prior generation, to provide a wider contrast ratio. Epson says the inks deliver twice the print permanence performance of the prior formulation. The P5000’s resin encapsulation technology has also been improved, which Epson says results in better gloss uniformity and sharper images. The P5000 delivers variable droplet sizes as small as 3.5 picoliters and features a 2.7-inch LCD panel for accessing printer settings.

The printer has a free Print Layout utility, which will work with any model in the SureColor series. Epson’s Print Layout software essentially aggregates print driver functions into a single, easy-to-navigate window. Using the software, you can create photo layouts, and manage color with support for ICC profiles and color modes available in the Epson print driver. You can apply customized frames and borders for gallery-wrap prints, too. The software supports a live print preview when using the software’s Advanced Black and White Mode. You’ll have the ability to make more accurate edits to your monochrome images (non-destructively) with real-time previews of your changes. You’ll have preset black-and-white settings (warm, cool, etc.) with slider-based controls to fine-tune your selections. Print Layout is available as a plug-in for Photoshop or as a standalone app for Windows and Mac. Unlike with traditional plugins, however, once an image is transferred from Photoshop to Epson Print Layout, you’ll be able to return to Photoshop to edit additional images.
